Next Time

next time, o lord
give me countless ears
that i may hear your voice all around:

sometimes as the song of the nightingale
sometimes as the gurgling of wine
sometimes as waves in the seas
sometimes as the morning breeze

next time, o lord
give me a million eyes
that i may see your beauty all around

somewhere as a half-hidden moon
somewhere as a half-opened bloom
somewhere as the smile of a child
somewhere in the flight of birds wild

next time, o lord
give a heart humongous
that i may feel your heart-beat all around

perhaps as the words of the fakirs
perhaps as the silence of the snows
perhaps as the face of the poor man's pain
perhaps as tyranny of misfortune's reign

next time, o lord
next time
